Public lecture by Dr George X Zhang, formerly Director of University of London SOAS Language Centre and the London Confucius Institute
The current worldwide demand to learn Chinese poses challenges including the shortage of qualified personnel, effective learning and teaching materials and relevant research. This overview of developments in teaching Chinese in Europe (especially the UK) will refer to the European Benchmarking Chinese Language (EBCL) project.
Dr George X Zhang has led major initiatives in the teaching of Chinese in the UK and Europe and has published widely on second language pedagogy and applied linguistics. His Chinese language textbook series “Chinese in Steps” won the Confucius Institute Award for Outstanding International Chinese Teaching Materials in December 2010.
There should be sufficient parking at UCD on the evening of the talk. The event is being organised by IRAAL in association with the UCD Applied Language Centre.
